Coherent's record AI quarter still wasn't good enough for investors

Coherent delivered the AI-driven beat-and-raise the market wanted, yet shares still fell 12.75% because expectations had moved even higher. At 70.26x earnings, confirmation is no longer enough; COHR needs fresh acceleration.

COHR has reached the point where strong execution is merely the entry fee, not a catalyst. The Aug. 12 report delivered $2.05 billion of revenue against a $1.99 billion consensus estimate and included better-than-expected forward guidance, but the stock still dropped 12.75%. That reaction says the central risk is no longer whether AI demand exists; it is whether Coherent can grow fast enough to outrun the valuation already attached to that demand. Our take is bearishly straightforward: the stock needs a bigger surprise than a solid quarter can provide.

Insider activity adds another reason not to chase the dip as if it were an obvious bargain. Recent records show five insider sells totaling 3,000 shares and $1.02 million, with no reported insider buys. Insider transactions are not a standalone thesis, but the asymmetry matters when it appears alongside a rich multiple and a sharp reversal after strong news. At a TickerSpark Score of 60, with Valuation at 47 versus Profitability at 70, COHR looks like a good company whose market price is carrying more risk than the headline AI narrative suggests.

Street sentiment remains firmly supportive, with a consensus Buy made up of 23 Buy ratings, seven Holds, one Strong Buy, and no Sell or Strong Sell ratings. Post-earnings target increases to $420 and $375 show that estimates and long-term expectations are still moving higher. That is the strongest point for the other side, but it also sharpens the bear case: when analysts raise targets and the stock still sells off, the market is signaling that the question is valuation and timing, not disbelief in the business. Positive sentiment at 0.9651 over the latest seven-day period confirms that the narrative is intact; it does not prove the entry point is attractive.

The levels to respect are clear: a durable move back above the 332.57 50-day average would repair some of the technical damage, while the 268.35 200-day average marks the longer-term trend boundary. More important than either line is the next Q1 FY2027 report and any incremental disclosure on 1.6T, near-packaged optics, or datacenter capacity. We would change the bearish view only when that commentary produces a materially larger earnings or demand surprise than this beat-and-raise delivered. Until then, position size should reflect the risk of owning a high-expectation AI winner after the market has already shown that good news is not good enough.

Coherent's AI optics story just failed the pre-earnings test

Coherent's AI demand is real, but the stock's reaction has exposed how little room exists for an ordinary earnings beat. At 141.99x trailing earnings, confirmation is no longer enough: management has to lift an already aggressive AI-optics narrative.
