CoreWeave's Nvidia backing may be the AI trade's biggest credibility problem

CoreWeave's Nvidia investment validates the AI-cloud story, but it also exposes a circular financing loop built on expensive debt and constant GPU spending. Revenue is surging, yet the company's losses, insider selling, and weak trading trend make CRWV a contrarian sell rather than a clean AI winner.

CoreWeave is being marketed as independent proof that AI infrastructure demand is real, but Nvidia's direct ownership makes that proof less independent than it looks. Nvidia invested $2 billion in CoreWeave at $87.20 per share, while CoreWeave keeps expanding through debt facilities explicitly tied to GPU servers and related infrastructure. That structure turns the bull case into a circular bet: Nvidia supplies the ecosystem, provides capital, and benefits when customers keep buying compute. With CRWV still losing money and trading below its major moving averages, the financing loop is a bigger risk than the headline growth rate is a reason to buy.

The operating numbers do not yet justify treating that leverage as a minor footnote. Revenue growth was an extraordinary 167.9% year over year to $5.13 billion, but EPS growth fell 18.0% and net income growth fell 35.2%. The P/E is negative because earnings are negative, while the stock still carries a 5.94 price-to-sales multiple and a 35.42 EV/EBITDA multiple. The TickerSpark Score is only 44 out of 100, with Profitability at 40, Financial Health at 44, and Momentum at 30. Fast revenue growth is real, but the conversion of that growth into shareholder economics remains unproven.

That evidence keeps the bear case from being a claim that demand is imaginary. It does not resolve the quality-of-demand problem. A revenue beat can coexist with a fragile capital structure, and strategic partners do not erase high borrowing costs or negative margins. The earnings record reinforces the point: CoreWeave has beaten estimates in only 2 of its last 7 reported quarters. Meanwhile, the shares are below the 50-day and 200-day moving averages, and the stock has gained only 4.3% year to date while technology has gained 28.7%. The market is already questioning whether growth is translating into a durable business, and the tape is not offering confirmation.

The contrarian view changes only when the financial loop starts breaking in the right direction: independent customer demand must translate into better margins, repeated earnings execution, and less reliance on high-cost financing. Until then, Nvidia's backing makes the story more credible as a strategic partnership but less credible as independent validation. The rally can continue on headlines, yet the underlying setup still favors caution because the capex machine needs to keep running before CoreWeave proves it can generate value from it.
