Onto Innovation's quiet rally has an HBM receipt behind it

Onto Innovation's HBM exposure is now backed by a purchase agreement worth more than $240 million through 2027, not just AI enthusiasm. The valuation is demanding, but accelerating Dragonfly demand and a recent earnings beat keep the bull case firmly intact.

Onto Innovation is becoming a direct HBM buildout beneficiary, and the market is recognizing that before the story becomes semiconductor-industry wallpaper. The most compelling evidence is not a vague AI tie-in but a volume purchase agreement estimated at more than $240 million with a leading HBM manufacturer through 2027. That kind of committed demand gives ONTO's rally a fundamental receipt, even though the stock still has to prove that the order pipeline can translate into sustained earnings growth.

The HBM relationship has already moved beyond the evaluation stage. Onto disclosed that a leading HBM manufacturer selected its Dragonfly G5 for 2D inspection tied to the HBM4 ramp, with double-digit orders for Dragonfly G5 and 3Di and shipments starting in the second quarter of 2026. The larger purchase agreement covers Dragonfly 2D inspection and 3D bump metrology, creating unusually visible multi-year demand for a company whose current revenue is about $1.01 billion.

The product cycle is broadening at the same time. Onto expects Dragonfly platforms to grow more than 50% in 2026 versus 2025, while advanced packaging is expected to grow more than 30%. Management also raised second-quarter revenue guidance to $320 million-$330 million from $275 million-$285 million, a meaningful signal that demand is arriving faster than the earlier outlook assumed.

Execution is beginning to show up in the numbers. On August 6, Onto reported earnings per share of $1.93 against a $1.68 estimate, a 14.9% beat. The stock is up 75.5% year to date, outperforming technology by 46.4 percentage points, and consensus stands at Buy with 11 buy ratings and no hold or sell ratings. The market is not merely chasing a narrative; it is rewarding improving visibility around advanced packaging and inspection.

The bear case starts with the price tag. ONTO trades at 108.28 times trailing earnings and 12.94 times sales, while revenue growth is only 1.8% year over year and EPS growth is negative 32%. The TickerSpark Score is 56, with a Valuation sub-score of 40 and a Growth sub-score of 25. Those figures say the stock is pricing in a sharp acceleration that has not yet appeared in trailing results.

HBM is also still one part of a wider business, so the $240 million-plus agreement should not be treated as guaranteed near-term revenue or as proof that ONTO deserves a pure-play HBM multiple. The stock remains below its 50-day moving average of $295.19, and its price action shows distribution. Still, the counterargument loses force when a customer commitment runs through 2027 and the company is simultaneously forecasting more than 50% Dragonfly growth. The valuation is aggressive because the opportunity is becoming more tangible, not because the market has no evidence.

This is a bullish setup, but not an invitation to ignore valuation. We would treat the HBM agreement, HBM4 shipments, and Dragonfly growth outlook as the core reasons to own the thesis, while sizing the position for the possibility that expectations outrun quarterly delivery. The next proof point is whether management confirms that the HBM4 ramp is tracking and sustains the more than 50% Dragonfly growth outlook.

Near term, $295.19 is the level to reclaim for technical confirmation, while the $225.61 200-day moving average is the deeper trend level to respect. A cut to the growth outlook or a failure to convert the HBM commitments into shipments would change our mind. Until then, ONTO's premium multiple is justified by a real HBM receipt and a product cycle that is expanding beyond one customer win.

AI will not lift all software stocks—the winners own the workflow, not the seat

AI is not a rising tide for software: platforms embedded in critical workflows and usage-linked infrastructure have a clearer path to monetization than undifferentiated seat-based applications. The latest earnings reactions show investors are already separating those models, making software selection—not software exposure—the trade.

Marvell's selloff is misreading the Google custom-chip deal

Marvell's 5.57% slide looks more like profit-taking after the Google deal rally than a break in the AI infrastructure story. The $12.18 billion warrant-linked agreement adds hyperscaler visibility just days before earnings, making the reversal a measured buy-the-dip setup.
