Reddit’s selloff looks justified because the market is finally pricing the one risk that can break the premium narrative: dependence on Google for both monetization and discovery. A reported $60 million annual licensing relationship sounds like leverage until investors remember Google also controls a major traffic funnel and is increasingly answering user queries inside its own AI products. That is a dangerous setup for a stock trading at 45.98x earnings and 13.38x sales. When a company is priced for sustained dominance, a distribution dependency like this stops being a footnote and becomes the story.
The cleanest reason to stay bearish is that this is not a hypothetical risk anymore. Shares fell about 9% after reports that Reddit is internally discussing whether to block Google from accessing its content for AI training, putting that roughly $60 million a year arrangement in play. That headline mattered because it exposed the real bind: keep feeding Google and risk more answers happening on Google instead of Reddit, or push back and risk losing licensing revenue and possibly search visibility. Either path weakens the idea that Reddit fully controls its own growth engine.
There is already precedent for Google changes hitting Reddit where it hurts. In Q4 2024, a Google search algorithm change contributed to Reddit missing daily active unique visitor estimates, and the stock dropped 15% in extended trading. That matters more than the latest rumor because it shows traffic sensitivity has already shown up in operating reality. The market is not inventing a new fear here; it is re-pricing an old vulnerability that never really went away.
The valuation leaves very little room for that vulnerability. RDDT’s TickerSpark Score is a solid 70, but the split inside that score tells the whole story: Growth is 100 and Profitability is 95, while Valuation is only 43 and Momentum is 30. Revenue is up 69.4% year over year and net margin is a strong 28.6%, yet the stock is still down 29.3% year to date, lagging the Communication Services sector by 20.5 percentage points. That is what happens when a market stops rewarding raw growth and starts questioning the durability of the traffic behind it.
The bullish rebuttal is not hard to find. Reddit has been beating expectations consistently, with a 7-for-7 earnings beat streak and consensus still sitting at Buy with 17 buys against 10 holds and no sells. The operating profile is also real, not promotional: 91.4% gross margin, 25.1% operating margin, and 205.6% EPS growth are elite numbers for an internet platform. Bulls can also argue that if Google is paying for access, Reddit’s content is a scarce asset with pricing power rather than a commodity at risk of being squeezed.
That argument still falls apart on the stock’s current setup because premium multiples demand confidence, not strategic ambiguity. If Google is both customer and gatekeeper, then even strong execution can be overshadowed by one external platform decision. The recent insider tape does not help either: zero buys against 9 sells totaling $6.72 million. For a stock still carrying a 13.38x sales multiple, that is not the kind of signal that supports paying up through a live distribution debate.
That leaves RDDT looking like a stock to avoid chasing into July 30 earnings, not a dip to celebrate. We would need to hear something concrete on search exposure, referral stability, and how management plans to balance AI licensing against visibility before getting constructive again. Until then, the burden of proof sits with the bulls.
The trigger that would change our mind is simple: evidence that Reddit can keep user growth and ad momentum intact even as Google’s AI products expand, without sacrificing the economics of its content deals. Absent that, the stock’s move below both its 50-day and 200-day averages, plus a Momentum component of 30 in the TickerSpark Score, says the market is still de-rating the story rather than resetting it for the next leg up.
