▌Investment Summary
ATI Inc. (ATI) looks like a solid business but only a Hold right now, earning an overall grade of B-. Q2 2026 revenue rose 11% to $1.3B, adjusted EBITDA jumped 37% to $284M, and the company lifted full-year adjusted EPS guidance to $4.90-$5.18, but our fair value is $200 and the shares already reflect much of the turnaround.

Thesis

ATI Inc. (ATI) has become a higher-quality aerospace and defense materials company, but its share price already reflects much of the turnaround. The central investment case rests on three named facts: Q2 2026 revenue rose 11% year over year to $1.3B, adjusted EBITDA increased 37% to $284M, and the company raised full-year 2026 adjusted EPS guidance to $4.90-$5.18. Those results show real operating progress, not merely a better narrative.

ATI's strongest assets are its qualified positions in demanding jet-engine programs, its record $4.4B backlog, and its exposure to defense, naval nuclear, missile, and missile-defense applications. AA&S has also moved from a lower-margin cyclical business toward a second earnings engine, with Q2 segment sales of $624M and a 23.7% margin. The counterweight is valuation: ATI trades at 67.7x trailing earnings and 43.5x forward earnings, while the $193.59 share price sits near the $200.33 analyst target.

For a moderate-risk investor with a medium-term horizon, ATI earns a Hold recommendation. The business deserves a premium for its qualifications, backlog, and margin expansion, but net debt of $1.53B, insider selling, and a forward earnings multiple above 40x leave limited room for execution errors. The investment becomes more compelling at $175 or below, while $225 and above would require a more aggressive view of the 2027-2028 earnings ramp.

Company Overview

ATI Inc. (ATI), formerly Allegheny Technologies Incorporated, produces specialty materials and complex components for demanding industrial applications. The Dallas-based company was founded in 1996, employs approximately 7,600 people, and trades on the NYSE. Its products include titanium and titanium-based alloys, nickel- and cobalt-based superalloys, hafnium, zirconium, niobium, metallic powders, forgings, tubes, rolled products, machined parts, and other long product forms.

▌Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

+Is ATI stock a buy right now?
ATI is not a Buy at current levels; it is a Hold. The company is executing well with stronger aerospace and defense exposure, but the valuation is already rich and leaves limited upside unless earnings keep compounding quickly.
+What is ATI's fair value?
ATI's fair value is $200. We get there by weighing the company’s improving mix, record $4.4B backlog, and margin expansion against a forward earnings multiple of 43.5x and a share price that is already close to the analyst target of $200.33.
+Why is ATI rated Hold instead of Buy?

The company operates through two segments: High Performance Materials & Components, or HPMC, and Advanced Alloys & Solutions, or AA&S. In 2025, HPMC generated $2.66B of revenue, or 53.2% of the total, while AA&S generated $2.35B, or 46.8%. ATI's 2025 annual report also identified aerospace and defense as 68% of total revenue, the highest mix in company history.

ATI serves commercial aerospace, defense, medical, specialty energy, electronics, construction and mining, transportation, oil and gas, automotive, and industrial markets. The concentration in aerospace and defense has increased the company's exposure to aircraft production and defense modernization, while reducing the relative importance of lower-value stainless and conventional industrial products.

Business Segment Deep Dive

HPMC is ATI's largest long-term growth platform and the foundation of its aerospace strategy. Q2 2026 HPMC sales rose 5% year over year to $637M, while the segment margin expanded 40 basis points to 24.1%. Growth came primarily from nickel products used in jet engines, where higher volume and pricing offset shipments shifted by qualification timing at the Mexico facility and the EB2 titanium electron-beam furnace.

The HPMC mix is already heavily aerospace-oriented. In Q1 2026, aerospace and defense represented 93% of HPMC sales, compared with 91% in Q4 2025. Q1 HPMC sales were $614.3M, segment EBITDA was $152.9M, and the segment EBITDA margin was 24.9%. The quarter's 8% increase in commercial jet-engine sales gave the segment a clear demand anchor.

AA&S is the more important transformation story. Q2 sales rose 17% year over year to $624M, and the segment margin reached 23.7%, up 930 basis points. Management attributed the improvement to portfolio optimization, pricing, mix, long-term contract restructuring, and stronger defense and nuclear demand. Aerospace and defense now represent approximately 44% of AA&S revenue, more than double the share five years ago.

Management has set a structural goal of keeping AA&S EBITDA margins above 20% and described a mid-20% margin profile as the forward objective. That target is supported by the exit from standard stainless products, an 80/20 portfolio approach, stronger commercial agreements, and the scarcity value of high-purity hafnium and zirconium.

Flagship Product Analysis

ATI's flagship economic exposure is its high-temperature nickel alloy content in commercial jet engines. Management reported that jet-engine revenue increased 13% year over year and 8% sequentially in Q2 2026. ATI supports every major next-generation commercial engine platform and produces six of the seven most advanced nickel-based superalloys, including five for which it is the sole-source supplier.

The product advantage is tied to engine design. ATI said its content on next-generation engines is more than double its content on legacy platforms because its materials sit in the hottest and most demanding sections of the engine. Management also reported that next-generation engines represented approximately 35% of the installed fleet and were projected to exceed 50% by 2030.

The second flagship product family is high-purity hafnium and zirconium. ATI described itself as one of three qualified producers in the Western world that can meet the purity standards required for aerospace and nuclear energy applications. The combination of qualification requirements and China's export restrictions has supported stronger pricing in defense, specialty energy, and jet-engine alloy materials.

Innovation & Competitive Advantage

ATI's moat is built less on a single patent than on qualification, process expertise, and integrated production. The company operates across melting, forging, rolling, finishing, testing, machining, and additive manufacturing. That breadth gives customers a qualified supply chain for materials that carry strict performance, traceability, and reliability requirements.

The 2025 10-K identifies proprietary process technologies, research and development capabilities, and long-term customer relationships as competitive advantages. ATI has long-term agreements with major aerospace OEMs and engine manufacturers, including Boeing, Airbus, GE Aerospace, Safran, Rolls-Royce, and Pratt & Whitney. In this market, replacing a qualified supplier is a project, not a purchase-order edit.

The Elevation operating system is the main internal innovation program. ATI reported year-over-year throughput gains of 30% in ultrasonic inspection, 15% in isothermal forgings, and 15% in primary nickel melt. These gains matter because the business is adding capacity while also increasing the output of existing assets.

ATI's capital projects extend that advantage. The Chihuahua, Mexico facility supports next-generation engine testing and inspection, while the EB2 furnace expands premium-quality titanium capability. A new vacuum-induction-melting furnace is scheduled to come online by the end of 2027, with combined nickel investments targeted to increase capacity 15%-20% by early 2028 versus year-end 2025. Management assigns approximately $350M of incremental annual revenue to those investments by 2028.

Operations & Supply Chain

Q2 2026 showed the operating model working at scale. Consolidated adjusted EBITDA margin expanded 440 basis points year over year to 22.6%, supported by commercial terms, mix, execution, and Elevation productivity. Adjusted EBITDA of $284M exceeded the high end of prior guidance by $29M, even after excluding a $10M asset-sale gain.

Supply-chain execution remains central because ATI uses nickel, titanium sponge, cobalt, ferrochromium, and molybdenum. The 2025 10-K identifies international sourcing, geopolitical instability, trade policy, and supply interruptions as risks to cost and production. ATI's long-term agreements and sole-source positions reduce customer switching, but they do not eliminate raw-material exposure.

Q2 capital expenditures were $69M, including $23M funded directly by customers. Full-year gross capital spending guidance was $280M-$300M, with customer-funded capital of $55M-$65M providing a partial offset. The company stated that its key growth projects remained on schedule and on budget.

Working capital is still a meaningful operational lever. Managed working capital was 34% of sales at the end of Q2, and ATI is implementing a customer-consignment strategy for forging input material. The company expects second-half cash generation to benefit from higher shipments, inventory conversion, and customer-funded capital, although late-Q4 shipments will first increase accounts receivable.

Market Analysis

ATI's largest market is commercial jet engines. Management reported high-teens full-year jet-engine revenue growth, supported by both original-equipment production and aftermarket demand. The industry transition toward next-generation engines is particularly important because ATI's content on those platforms is more than twice its legacy-platform content.

Commercial airframe demand is a second growth channel. ATI reported that airframe inventories had largely normalized and that customer ordering patterns were aligning with announced OEM build rates. Landing-gear alloys remained the strongest airframe product category, while plate demand was improving. Management projected mid- to high-single-digit full-year airframe revenue growth, weighted toward the second half.

Defense is the fastest-growing reported end market. Q2 defense revenue increased 36% year over year to an all-time high, driven by naval nuclear, missile, and missile-defense applications. ATI's renewed naval nuclear agreement extends through 2030 and more than doubles annual revenue compared with the prior contract. Orders have also begun for the Tomahawk program, alongside demand tied to THAAD and PAC-3.

The external market backdrop supports this mix. Industry research cited a U.S. aerospace and defense market of $463.1B in 2026, with a projected 5.7% compound annual growth rate through 2031. Separate industry research placed the global defense cybersecurity market at an 8.3% compound annual growth rate through 2030, illustrating the broader modernization cycle that supports defense spending, even though ATI participates through materials rather than software.

Customer Profile

ATI's customers include major airframe manufacturers, commercial engine makers, defense contractors, nuclear-energy customers, and industrial buyers. The 2025 annual report identifies Boeing, Airbus, GE Aerospace, Safran, Rolls-Royce, and Pratt & Whitney among the major aerospace relationships. These customers value qualified materials and reliable delivery because a failed material specification can delay an entire production chain.

The customer mix is shifting toward contracts with longer visibility and stronger pricing. ATI reported a record $4.4B backlog in Q2 2026, up 18% year over year and 7% sequentially. Management said the backlog increasingly reflects long-term agreements, sole-source positions, and strategic programs with multiyear shipment visibility.

That visibility is valuable, but concentration cuts both ways. ATI's 10-K identifies the loss of a major aerospace or defense customer and the failure to renew or reprice long-term agreements as material risks. The company's 68% aerospace and defense revenue mix in 2025 increases the benefit of strong aircraft and defense production, while also increasing the effect of a sector slowdown.

Competitive Landscape

ATI competes in a specialized market with a limited group of technically capable suppliers. Its 2025 10-K names Berkshire Hathaway's Precision Castparts, Howmet Aerospace (HWM), Carpenter Technology (CRS), and Aubert & Duval as principal HPMC competitors. In AA&S, the company identifies Haynes International and VDM Metals, owned by Acerinox, among its principal competitors.

Precision Castparts competes across nickel alloys, superalloys, titanium alloys, and precision forgings. Howmet has exposure to titanium and engineered aerospace components. Carpenter competes in nickel-based superalloys and specialty steels, while Aubert & Duval competes in precision forgings. ATI's competitive position is strongest in qualified materials, integrated production, and products that sit in high-temperature engine environments.

ATI's reported product leadership is concrete. It supports every major next-generation commercial engine platform, supplies five of the seven most advanced nickel-based superalloys as the sole source, and is one of three qualified Western producers of high-purity hafnium and zirconium. Those positions create pricing power that commodity metal producers cannot easily replicate.

The main competitive threat is not a sudden loss of all market share. It is margin pressure if competitors qualify alternative capacity, customers push back on contract pricing, or raw-material inflation moves faster than surcharge mechanisms. ATI's 10-K specifically identifies competition, pricing pressure, and lagging raw-material pass-through as risks.

Macro & Geopolitical Landscape

ATI benefits from two macro cycles that are visible in its reported results: commercial aircraft replacement and defense modernization. External industry research cited more than 43,000 aircraft of long-term demand from Airbus and Boeing forecasts, while the five largest defense primes ended fiscal 2025 with a combined backlog of $1.36T. ATI does not receive the full value of those markets, but its $4.4B backlog shows that it is already positioned inside the supply chain.

Geopolitical tension is especially relevant to specialty alloys. Management linked China's export restrictions to tighter high-purity hafnium and zirconium markets. That environment supports ATI's Western qualification status and helped improve pricing in AA&S during Q2 2026.

The same forces create risk. ATI's 10-K identifies geopolitical instability, trade policy changes, and international raw-material supply as potential sources of higher costs or constrained production. The company also relies on commercial aerospace production rates, so macro weakness that affects airlines, aircraft manufacturers, or engine makers would eventually reach ATI.

For a moderate-risk investor, ATI's macro exposure is favorable but cyclical. Defense and nuclear programs provide longer contract visibility, while commercial jet engines provide greater growth potential. The mix is stronger than a broad industrial-metal profile, but it is not insulated from aircraft build-rate changes or government procurement timing.

Closing

ATI has earned a higher-quality industrial profile. HPMC remains a leading aerospace platform, AA&S has become a second durable earnings engine, and the Q2 2026 figures show the transformation in hard numbers: $1.3B of revenue, $284M of adjusted EBITDA, a 22.6% adjusted EBITDA margin, and a $4.4B backlog.

The stock is not a bargain after its climb from a 52-week low of $70.42 to a high of $208.71. The $193.59 price reflects strong execution, while the $1.53B net debt balance, concentrated aerospace exposure, and insider selling limit the appeal for a moderate-risk buyer at the current quote.

The disciplined position is Hold, with a preference for adding near $175 and below. ATI's qualified materials, sole-source alloy positions, defense renewal, and capacity investments can support long-term value creation, but the next leg higher requires delivery on the second-half shipment recovery and the 2027 earnings ramp rather than another expansion of the multiple.

ATI earns a Hold because the turnaround is real, but the stock is not cheap enough to offer a wide margin of safety. Net debt of $1.53B, insider selling, and a premium valuation offset the benefits of 11% revenue growth and 37% adjusted EBITDA growth in Q2 2026.
+What are ATI's biggest growth drivers?
ATI's biggest growth drivers are jet-engine nickel alloys, defense and missile-defense demand, and the AA&S segment's margin reset. HPMC sales rose 5% in Q2 2026, AA&S sales rose 17%, and aerospace and defense now account for 68% of total revenue.
+How expensive is ATI stock compared with its fundamentals?
ATI looks expensive at 67.7x trailing earnings and 43.5x forward earnings. That valuation is hard to justify unless the 2027-2028 earnings ramp accelerates meaningfully beyond the current guidance of $4.90-$5.18 in adjusted EPS for 2026.
