Kenvue (KVUE): Turnaround Signs, But Patience Needed
Kenvue is showing early stabilization with improving margins and revenue growth, but debt, mixed segment performance, and a pending Kimberly-Clark combination keep the stock in Hold territory.
Kenvue is showing early stabilization with improving margins and revenue growth, but debt, mixed segment performance, and a pending Kimberly-Clark combination keep the stock in Hold territory.

Kenvue Inc. (KVUE) merits a Hold rating for moderate-risk investors with a medium-term horizon. The company owns a durable portfolio of consumer-health brands, generated $1.7B of free cash flow in fiscal 2025, and carries a forward P/E of 16.7x. Those strengths are offset by $8.4B of debt, a 0.96 current ratio, recent revenue contraction, and a restructuring program that still requires execution.
The business is showing early signs of stabilization. Q1 2026 revenue rose 4.5% to $3.9B, adjusted operating margin expanded to 24.0% from 19.8%, and adjusted diluted EPS increased to $0.32 from $0.24. Skin Health and Beauty delivered 5.0% organic growth in that quarter, while Self Care declined 2.3%. The improvement is real, but the portfolio has not yet produced consistent company-wide organic growth.
Kenvue also has strategic optionality from its announced combination with Kimberly-Clark, which management expects to complete in the second half of 2026. That transaction adds complexity to the investment case and led Kenvue to suspend forward guidance. The stock offers a credible recovery path, but the evidence supports patience rather than an aggressive purchase.
Kenvue is a global consumer-health company headquartered in Summit, New Jersey. Incorporated in 2022 and listed on the NYSE since May 2023, it had 21,780 employees and fiscal 2025 revenue of approximately $15.1B. Its portfolio includes Tylenol, Listerine, Neutrogena, Aveeno, BAND-AID, Johnson's, Nicorette, Zyrtec, Motrin, OGX, Rogaine, and other consumer-health brands.
The company operates through Self Care, Skin Health and Beauty, and Essential Health. Kenvue says its brands reach about 1.2 billion people globally, giving the company a broad installed consumer base across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America.
Self Care is Kenvue's largest segment, producing $6.4B of fiscal 2025 revenue, or 42.2% of the total. Essential Health generated $4.6B, or 30.6%, while Skin Health and Beauty generated $4.1B, or 27.2%. The mix gives Kenvue exposure to pain care, allergy, cough and cold, oral care, wound care, skin care, hair care, and baby care.
The segment picture is uneven. Q2 2025 organic sales declined 5.9% in Self Care, 3.7% in Skin Health and Beauty, and 2.4% in Essential Health. The quarter was affected by weak allergy and sun-care seasons, retailer inventory patterns, and lower shipment volumes. In Q1 2026, Skin Health and Beauty reversed direction with 5.0% organic growth, Essential Health grew 1.5%, and Self Care declined 2.3%.
Self Care remains the portfolio's strongest brand platform despite its recent volume pressure. Management reported that 83% of the U.S. Self Care business held or gained share in Q2 2025, and adult Tylenol recorded its 12th consecutive quarter of U.S. share improvement. Essential Health has stronger wound-care execution through BAND-AID, but Listerine has been losing share across the total U.S. market.

Tylenol is the clearest flagship asset in Kenvue's portfolio. Management described it as the number-one healthcare-professional-recommended brand and reported 12 consecutive quarters of U.S. adult share improvement through Q2 2025. That record gives Kenvue a strong base for line extensions, marketing, and distribution negotiations.
The company is extending Tylenol into adjacent use cases with Tylenol Precise Nighttime and Children's Tylenol Natural Apple Flavor. The children's product uses a dye-free formula without artificial flavoring, linking product development to a specific consumer preference rather than simply adding another package to the shelf.
Zyrtec is another important proof point. In Q2 2025, the brand strengthened its U.S. allergy leadership position and increased household penetration across adult and children's franchises despite the second-lowest allergy incidence quarter on record. Listerine is the weaker flagship asset: its premium line is growing, but the broader U.S. business is losing share because Kenvue has not competed strongly enough in the faster-growing mild alcohol-free segment.
Kenvue's competitive advantage is based on brand trust, healthcare credibility, distribution scale, and consumer familiarity rather than proprietary technology. Tylenol, Zyrtec, Neutrogena, Aveeno, Listerine, and BAND-AID occupy recurring-use categories where consumers often prefer a known brand when safety, efficacy, or skin tolerance matters.
Innovation performance is improving but remains concentrated. Management identified the OGX Bond Protein Repair launch as Kenvue's top-performing innovation year to date in Q2 2025, with the launch helping secure additional distribution. The company also cited a robust back-half innovation pipeline, including new Tylenol and Listerine offerings.
The main strategic problem is focus. Kenvue has 115 brands, but 41 brands account for more than three-quarters of sales across one or more regions. A long tail of SKUs represents a significant portion of the assortment while contributing approximately 1% of sales. Simplifying that portfolio can improve marketing efficiency and retail execution, although removing products always carries distribution and consumer-choice risk.
Kenvue's manufacturing footprint produced about 60% of fiscal 2025 sales volume internally. That level of in-house production gives the company direct control over a meaningful portion of capacity, quality, and procurement, while the remaining external network provides flexibility across geographies and product categories.
Management has identified procurement, network optimization, planning, digitization, inventory, and payables as supply-chain levers. Our Vue Forward savings were tracking toward $350M of annualized savings by 2026, according to the fiscal 2024 investor presentation. The Q1 2026 margin improvement to 24.0% adjusted operating margin provides early evidence that productivity and cost actions are reaching the income statement.
Execution risk remains material. The 2026 Restructuring Initiative carries expected pre-tax charges of approximately $250M, while the 2025 earnings call cited a gross annualized tariff impact of about $150M based on tariffs then in effect. Management also said Kenvue's SG&A costs were above comparable benchmarks after separation from Johnson & Johnson. The operational upside is meaningful, but it will require several moving parts to work at once.
Kenvue operates in a large and recurring market. Mordor Intelligence estimates the global personal-care products market at $563.2B in 2026, up from $535.2B in 2025, with a projected 5.2% CAGR through 2031. Statista's narrower personal-care definition projects a 2.9% CAGR from 2024 through 2029. The difference reflects category definitions, but both estimates support a large underlying demand pool.
The strongest market themes are premiumization, efficacy-led purchasing, digital discovery, and clinically inspired formulations. Kenvue's Skin Health and Beauty segment is positioned for these trends through Neutrogena, Aveeno, OGX, Rogaine, and other brands. Q1 2026 Skin Health and Beauty organic growth of 5.0% shows that the company can participate in these categories when innovation and digital execution improve.
The market also carries structural pressure from private label, generic OTC products, rising paid-media costs, retail concentration, and e-commerce competition. Gartner has identified heavy paid-media reliance among personal-care marketers, while Kenvue has acknowledged U.S. e-commerce underperformance as a source of volume pressure. Brand equity helps, but it does not make shelf space or digital visibility free.

Kenvue serves consumers through mass retailers, pharmacies, grocery outlets, healthcare channels, and e-commerce platforms. Its products target households seeking pain relief, allergy treatment, oral care, skin care, hair care, baby care, feminine care, wound care, and smoking cessation. The breadth of the portfolio creates frequent purchase occasions across different life stages.
Retailers remain powerful customers because Kenvue sells through large chains and records trade promotions, discounts, rebates, and product returns as reductions in sales. The 2025 10-K identified $6.5B of U.S. net sales and treated U.S. revenue recognition as a critical audit matter because shipment timing and trade-promotion accounting require detailed controls.
Consumer trust is especially important in Kenvue's OTC categories. The Q2 2025 earnings call linked Tylenol's share gains to healthcare-professional recommendations, brand campaigns, sampling, and claims support. In Skin Health and Beauty, the positive response to OGX Bond Protein Repair and the return of Neutrogena Face consumption to year-over-year growth show how specific product benefits can improve customer engagement.
Kenvue names Haleon, Procter & Gamble, Reckitt Benckiser, and private-label products as major Self Care competitors. In Skin Health and Beauty, it competes with Beiersdorf, Estée Lauder, L'Oréal, Procter & Gamble, Unilever, and private label. Essential Health competitors include Church & Dwight, Colgate-Palmolive, Haleon, Kimberly-Clark, Procter & Gamble, and private label.
Kenvue's advantage versus smaller brands is its portfolio breadth and global distribution. Its disadvantage versus larger diversified CPG companies is lower scale across some retail negotiations and a less consistent execution record. The company also has less exposure to prestige beauty than L'Oréal, Estée Lauder, or Beiersdorf, which limits participation in the highest-end beauty categories.
The most important competitive test is share retention. Tylenol, Zyrtec, and BAND-AID have produced concrete share gains, while Listerine and portions of Skin Health and Beauty have required turnaround efforts. That split explains why Kenvue's valuation is reasonable but not compelling enough for a broad-based Buy rating.
Kenvue's earnings remain exposed to inflation, currency, tariffs, and seasonal demand. In Q2 2025, adjusted gross margin fell 70 basis points to 60.9% because supply-chain productivity was more than offset by input-cost inflation, unfavorable mix, foreign exchange, and strategic price investments. The company also cited weak allergy and sun-care seasons as causes of lower replenishment orders.
Regulation adds another layer of risk. In the United States, the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act expanded requirements for facility registration, product listing, safety substantiation, adverse-event reporting, and records access. European Union ingredient restrictions can require formulation changes, testing, and packaging revisions. These rules affect product development costs and can delay launches.
Litigation is a separate risk factor. Kenvue's business context identifies legal exposure related to acetaminophen, talc, and phenylephrine concerns, including October 2025 claims in the United Kingdom involving Johnson's Baby Powder and a Texas petition involving acetaminophen claims. The Kimberly-Clark combination, announced November 2, 2025, received shareholder approval on January 29, 2026, and cleared the HSR waiting period on February 4, 2026, but it still adds integration and regulatory complexity.
Kenvue carries $8.4B of debt and a 0.96 current ratio, leaving limited room for error even after generating $1.7B of free cash flow in fiscal 2025.

Get Full Access →Kenvue is a recognizable consumer-health franchise with real operating assets and a credible path to better margins. Q1 2026 delivered revenue growth, stronger gross margin, a 4.2 percentage-point improvement in adjusted operating margin, and adjusted EPS of $0.32. Tylenol, Zyrtec, BAND-AID, and the improving Skin Health and Beauty portfolio provide a foundation that many smaller consumer brands would gladly rent.
The investment case remains balanced rather than one-sided. Debt is high, the current ratio is below 1.0, fiscal 2025 revenue declined, and management has acknowledged weaknesses in execution, SKU complexity, e-commerce, Listerine, and Self Care seasonality. The Kimberly-Clark combination adds strategic potential but also adds integration demands.
For a medium-term investor, Kenvue is a Hold until margin gains become repeatable and organic growth broadens beyond Skin Health and Beauty. The company does not need a heroic transformation to create value, but it does need consistent execution across its largest brands, customers, and markets. That is a manageable assignment, not a completed one.
