IREN just crossed from AI story stock to contracted revenue machine

IREN’s latest jump looks earned because the company now has a much larger contracted AI cloud revenue base, not just an AI narrative. The key shift is simple: management raised its year-end AI Cloud ARR target above $4 billion and says roughly 85% is already under contract.

IREN has crossed an important line from speculative AI transition story to contracted revenue machine, and that changes how the stock should be framed. The July update did not just add hype; it raised the year-end AI Cloud ARR target from $3.7 billion to more than $4.0 billion and said about 85% of that revised target is already under contract. That is why the latest surge makes sense. When a company moves from talking about opportunity to locking in multi-year demand, the market is no longer pricing a concept alone.

The cleanest reason to stay bullish is that the backlog is getting bigger and more concrete at the same time. IREN signed $2.8 billion of new multi-year cloud services contracts with leading AI developers, building on the previously disclosed $3.4 billion, five-year AI cloud contract announced in May. That is the difference between an AI-adjacent stock and an infrastructure platform with visible demand. Even the cautious side of the Street is now debating valuation against a larger contracted base, not whether the AI cloud pivot is real.

The operating profile is already starting to reflect that transition. Revenue growth is running at 167.7% year over year, EPS growth at 241.4%, and net income growth at 400.6%, while gross margin sits at a healthy 53.6%. That combination matters because it shows IREN is not just signing splashy contracts into a weak core business. The TickerSpark Score reinforces that setup: Growth is a perfect 100, Profitability is 70, Financial Health is 76, and the overall TickerSpark Score is 63. This is not a cheap stock on traditional multiples, but hypergrowth infrastructure names rarely look cheap right when the revenue engine is being built.

The market reaction also fits a genuine re-rating rather than a one-day squeeze. Shares jumped 19.6% on the contract headline with roughly 1.8x relative volume, and analyst positioning remains supportive with a consensus Buy made up of 10 buys against 3 holds and 1 sell. That matters because the stock is being validated by both contract disclosures and external expectations. Compared with slower-growth financial peers like NMR or CG, IREN’s valuation looks extreme on P/E and P/S, but those peers are not growing revenue anywhere close to 167.7% or building around multi-billion-dollar AI cloud contracts.

The bear case is not hard to find. Revenue recognition still depends on commissioning, testing, customer acceptance, GPU availability, and pricing assumptions, so a signed contract is not the same thing as booked revenue next quarter. IREN also has a shaky earnings consistency record, with only a 2-for-7 beat rate in recent quarters, and public filings showed a May quarter revenue miss versus consensus expectations. That is a real execution risk, not noise.

The valuation is also undeniably rich. IREN trades at 19.28 times sales and 34.29 times EV/EBITDA, while the technical picture is not exactly clean, with the stock still below its 50-day and 200-day moving averages and a Momentum sub-score of just 30. Still, that is exactly why the contract shift matters so much: the bull case does not rest on momentum chasing, it rests on the business becoming more contracted and more visible. If the company starts converting this backlog on schedule, today’s multiples will look like the cost of admission to a real AI infrastructure buildout rather than a sign of pure excess.

The setup still favors the bulls because the core debate has changed in IREN’s favor. We would treat this as a high-upside, execution-sensitive growth name rather than a momentum trade, with August 27 earnings as the next hard proof point. What matters most now is whether management can show that commissioning and customer acceptance are translating the new contract stack into recognized revenue.

We would not change the bullish view because the stock is volatile or because the headline multiples look stretched in isolation. We would change it if the company starts slipping on deployment milestones or if the contracted ARR story stops converting into actual reported growth. Until that happens, IREN looks more like an AI infrastructure company earning a re-rating than a story stock living on borrowed hype.
