The AI trade is rotating, not breaking

The latest semiconductor selloff looks more like a crowding reset than proof that AI demand is cracking. The money appears to be moving from the most obvious chip winners toward hyperscalers, networking, and custom silicon names just as earnings are about to test whether AI spending is broadening.

The cleanest read on this week’s AI wobble is not that the trade is over, but that leadership is changing. Hedge funds have been dumping semiconductor and hardware stocks for four straight weeks, and the SOX’s early-July slide shows how quickly a crowded winner can become a source of cash. But that selling is happening alongside a very different fact pattern: the biggest cloud platforms are still preparing to spend enormous sums on AI infrastructure. When the buyers with the biggest checkbooks are still building, a chip selloff looks less like an unwind of AI and more like a handoff inside it.

Not Investment Advice

Made in Delaware, USA

The bear case is real, and it should not be waved away. If hyperscaler capex growth actually rolls over rather than merely shifts, semis can de-rate hard from here. Oracle’s recent stumble after heavy capex plans and a wider free-cash-flow deficit shows the market will punish AI spending if returns look too distant. But that is exactly why this is a rotation story, not a blind-beta story. The winners from here are less likely to be “anything with AI in the narrative” and more likely to be the companies that either control the spending budgets or sit in the infrastructure lanes where demand is broadening.

For now, we think the smarter framing is rotation, not rupture. The AI trade is getting more selective, more valuation-sensitive, and more dependent on who captures the next layer of spend. That is a very different problem from an AI collapse, and for investors, it is a much more interesting one.

Everpure's selloff is ignoring the hyperscaler proof point

Everpure’s 7.43% Aug. 24 plunge looks like pre-earnings de-risking, not a verdict on its second top-five hyperscaler design win. The Aug. 26 report will test timing, but the company’s growth record and still-intact demand setup make the selloff a contrarian setup.
