TickerSpark AI RatingHold
▌Investment Summary
EnerSys (ENS) is a Hold, earning an overall grade of B+ as improving data center, defense, and electrification exposure offset only modest top-line growth and mixed segment trends. Our fair value is $225, and the stock looks fairly valued unless management converts its new lithium and TPPL opportunities into faster earnings growth.

Thesis

Investment thesis: EnerSys (ENS) merits a Hold rating for a moderate-risk investor with a medium-term horizon. The company combines a strong balance sheet, $467.5M of fiscal 2026 free cash flow, a 9.3% free-cash-flow yield, and exposure to data centers, communications, electrification, and defense. Those strengths are offset by 1.3% trailing revenue growth, a 15.0% forward P/E that already prices in earnings recovery, and a 15.0% year-over-year decline in earnings in the core growth data.

EnerSys reported fiscal 2026 revenue of $3.75B, adjusted diluted EPS of $10.56, and operating cash flow of $547.6M. The latest quarter produced adjusted EPS of $3.19, a 7.0% increase from the prior year, even as organic volume fell 6.0%. This is a business that defended profitability through price, mix, cost control, and portfolio diversification rather than through broad volume growth.

The growth case is real but arrives in stages. Data center and communications demand is strong, aerospace and defense orders are expanding, and new lithium products reached customer commissioning in fiscal 2026. Management also stated that meaningful revenue from the new data center lithium product is expected in fiscal 2028. The stock therefore offers an improving earnings profile, but the valuation leaves less room for execution delays or another downturn in forklifts and transportation.

Fiscal 2026 revenue was split between $3.38B of product revenue, or 90.1% of total sales, and $370.9M of service revenue, or 9.9%. That mix gives EnerSys a large product base while preserving a meaningful service component tied to installed equipment and customer support.

EnerSys announced a segment realignment on May 28, 2026. The new structure groups the business into Network and Infrastructure Solutions, Industrial Mobility Solutions, and Specialty. The change combines lift-truck and transportation activities within Industrial Mobility Solutions and gives greater visibility to defense and aerospace activities within Specialty.

Business Segment Deep Dive

The fiscal 2026 reporting structure produced three major operating businesses. Energy Systems generated $1.65B of full-year revenue, Motive Power generated $1.43B, and Specialty generated $665.1M. The revenue base is therefore diversified across infrastructure, industrial mobility, transportation, and specialized applications.

Energy Systems was the strongest Q4 growth segment. Revenue rose 6.7% to $425.7M, while adjusted operating earnings increased 22.5% to $42.4M. Adjusted operating margin reached 10.0%, helped by price and mix, operating expense savings, and record XM product sales. Management also reported high-single-digit full-year data center growth and 36.0% year-over-year growth in Energy Systems orders.

Motive Power remained the main drag. Q4 revenue declined 5.7% to $370.1M, and adjusted operating earnings fell 20.9% to $52.6M. Adjusted operating margin was 14.2%, down from the prior year as lower volume reduced factory leverage and higher freight and tariff costs absorbed price and mix gains. Maintenance-free products increased to 30.4% of Motive Power revenue from 29.3% a year earlier.

Specialty delivered the best combination of growth and profitability improvement. Q4 revenue increased 8.1% to $192.2M, adjusted operating earnings rose 19.8% to $18.2M, and adjusted operating margin reached 9.4%. Aerospace and defense strength, favorable price and mix, and the Rebel acquisition offset lower transportation volumes. Transportation sales fell by a high-single-digit rate, but transportation orders rose more than 30.0% year over year.

Flagship Product Analysis

The flagship XM products are a major near-term contributor to Energy Systems. Management linked record XM sales to the segment's 10.0% adjusted operating margin in Q4. XM products also fit the company's focus on higher-margin, higher-performance stored-energy solutions.

EnerSys' TPPL technology is positioned for high-rate, short-duration data center discharges. Management described TPPL as capable of sub-five-minute and, in some cases, one-minute discharge rates that traditional lead-calcium designs cannot match. The company completed heavier investments in TPPL capacity flexibility during fiscal 2026, helping keep fiscal 2027 capital expenditure guidance near $70M after $80.1M of fiscal 2026 spending.

EnerSys launched the DataSafe Noir Lithium System for data center power on June 9, 2026. The product had reached customer commissioning by the end of fiscal 2026, but management stated that meaningful revenue lift is expected in fiscal 2028. That timing makes the product a strategic growth option rather than an immediate earnings driver.

Innovation & Competitive Advantage

EnerSys' competitive advantage rests on application expertise, qualification history, installed customer relationships, and the ability to combine batteries with chargers, power electronics, service, and software. The company sells into applications where uptime, backup power, and operating reliability matter, including telecommunications, data centers, utilities, defense, and material handling.

The lithium data center product expands the product stack without forcing customers into a single chemistry. Management said the new system is intended to capture additional share of wallet while allowing customers to select the technology that fits the application. That positioning is valuable because the data center market includes both lithium adoption and continued demand for lead-acid solutions.

The Greenville, South Carolina lithium cell program was rescoped toward customers that value secure domestic supply chains, particularly in aerospace and defense. Management said the revised approach uses more established cell technology, reduces complexity, and creates a faster path to production. Discussions with the Department of Energy had reached the final stages of the grant process as of the May 21, 2026 earnings call.

Bren-Tronics Defense LLC, acquired on July 26, 2024 for $206.4M, strengthened EnerSys' portable military power offering. The acquisition complements the company's stated focus on defense platforms, drones, counter-drone systems, soldier power, and space applications.

Operations & Supply Chain

EnerSys is reshaping its manufacturing footprint. The planned closure of the Tijuana, Mexico facility and production shift to Springfield, Missouri is expected to generate approximately $20M of incremental 45X benefits beginning in fiscal 2028. The substantially completed Monterrey, Mexico closure is expected to produce approximately $19M of savings in fiscal 2027.

The company reported tariff exposure equal to approximately 22.0% of U.S. sourcing, with an annualized pre-mitigation estimate of approximately $70M. Q4 freight costs were $20M higher than the prior year. EnerSys responded with regional sourcing, increased supply flexibility, and production closer to customers.

Working capital execution improved in fiscal 2026. Primary operating capital declined to $877M from $932M, helped by receivables collection and inventory efficiency. Operating cash flow reached $547.6M for the year, while capital expenditure fell to $80.1M from $121.0M in fiscal 2025.

The supply chain still carries material and logistics exposure. EnerSys identifies lead, plastics, steel, copper, and electronic components as key inputs, and the May 21 call cited elevated freight and inflation pressure tied to Middle East conflict. The company has no operations in that region, but management reported direct freight effects during fiscal Q4.

Market Analysis

EnerSys operates across several markets rather than one uniform battery category. The company's Investor Day materials identified a serviceable addressable market above $26B. Fiscal 2026 revenue of $3.75B gives the company a substantial installed base while leaving room to expand in newer applications such as data center lithium systems, warehouse energy storage, and defense power.

The broader industrial electrical components market was estimated at $57.2B in 2025 and is projected to reach $90.5B by 2030, representing a 9.6% compound annual growth rate. Battery energy storage systems were projected to grow at 14.0% to 15.0% annually, although the estimated 2026 revenue pool was revised to $87B because of saturation and lower balancing-asset profitability.

Data centers are a particularly important demand vector. EnerSys reported high-single-digit full-year data center growth, record broadband power shipments, and Q4 Energy Systems orders up 36.0% year over year. Management tied communications demand to DOCSIS 4.0 network upgrades and data center demand to AI infrastructure and expansion.

The industrial mobility market is more cyclical. Electric forklift and transportation demand declined during fiscal 2026, although Q4 orders improved sequentially and year over year. Management expects a gradual return to growth in both markets during fiscal 2027, led by Motive Power.

Customer Profile

EnerSys serves customers that purchase power systems for critical infrastructure and industrial operations. Network customers include broadband operators, telecommunications companies, data center operators, and industrial utilities. Mobility customers include forklift and warehouse operators, manufacturers, and transportation users.

Specialty customers include military and aerospace programs, medical applications, portable power users, and transportation customers. The July 2024 Bren-Tronics acquisition expanded the defense customer base, while the Greenville lithium plan is being refocused toward customers that place a premium on U.S.-based supply.

The product and service mix shows the nature of the relationship. Product revenue accounted for 90.1% of fiscal 2026 sales, while service revenue contributed 9.9%. EnerSys' sales channels include distributors, independent representatives, and internal sales forces, giving the company several routes to industrial and infrastructure buyers.

Customer behavior is increasingly shaped by reliability and power availability. Management identified power availability as a major gating factor for new data centers, while the company highlighted deferred investment in aging forklift fleets and battery replacements as a reason for improving Motive Power orders.

Competitive Landscape

EnerSys competes with East Penn Manufacturing, Clarios, Exide Technologies and Stryten, Fiamm, Banner, Atlas, GS Yuasa, Hoppecke, Crown Battery, C&D Technologies, and Saft across different battery and reserve-power applications. In adjacent power systems, Vertiv, OmniOn Power, and Delta Electronics also compete for portions of the customer solution.

Aerospace and defense competition includes EaglePicher and Saft. These markets carry qualification and program requirements that differ from conventional industrial batteries. Bren-Tronics therefore adds more than revenue: it expands EnerSys' exposure to a specialized customer group where product approval and application experience influence purchasing.

The competitive edge is strongest where EnerSys sells a complete power solution rather than a standalone battery. Its offering includes stored energy, chargers, power equipment, software-enabled intelligence, and support. That breadth helps explain why management continues to emphasize share of wallet and customer-focused projects.

The main competitive weakness is exposure to pricing pressure and excess capacity in battery markets. EnerSys also notes that some competitors own lead smelting facilities, creating a potential cost advantage during periods of rising lead prices. The company therefore needs continued price and mix discipline to preserve its recent margin performance.

Macro & Geopolitical Landscape

EnerSys is exposed to several macro forces at once. AI infrastructure is increasing data center power requirements, DOCSIS 4.0 is driving communications network refreshes, electrification is supporting industrial mobility, and higher global defense budgets are supporting aerospace and defense demand.

Trade policy is a direct earnings variable. Management quantified annualized tariff exposure at approximately $70M before mitigation and reported $20M of year-over-year freight cost inflation in Q4. Regional manufacturing and sourcing changes reduce exposure, but the cost burden remains relevant to margins and customer buying patterns.

Geopolitical risk has both cost and demand effects. The company reported elevated freight and other inflationary pressure from the Middle East conflict, while also identifying global defense spending as a long-term demand support. This creates an unusual split: the same geopolitical environment that increases defense opportunity can also disrupt logistics and delay industrial purchasing.

The industrial electrical components market also faces raw-material constraints, including silicon wafers and rare-earth materials. EnerSys' more direct exposure is to lead, steel, copper, plastics, freight, and electronic components. These inputs make price recovery and regional sourcing central to the medium-term margin outlook.

Closing

EnerSys has improved the quality of its earnings engine. Fiscal 2026 delivered $3.75B of revenue, $10.56 of adjusted EPS, $547.6M of operating cash flow, and $467.5M of free cash flow. The company also reduced working capital, completed major footprint actions, and ended the year with reported net leverage of 1.1x EBITDA.

The next phase depends on mix and execution. Data centers, communications, aerospace and defense, TPPL, and lithium products provide identifiable growth drivers. Motive Power and transportation provide the cyclical counterweight. Management's fiscal 2027 guidance and the $12.07 fiscal 2027 EPS estimate support an earnings recovery, but the fiscal 2029 EPS estimate of $13.23 shows that the path is not perfectly linear.

A Hold rating at a fair-value estimate of $225 captures that mix of strength and restraint. EnerSys is financially durable and strategically relevant, but the stock needs continued order growth, tariff mitigation, and successful commercialization of newer products before a stronger rating is justified.

EnerSys is rated Hold because the positives are real but not yet fully translated into growth. Data center and communications demand is strong, aerospace and defense orders are improving, and the balance sheet is healthy, but trailing revenue growth is only 1.3% and Motive Power remains a drag.
+What are the biggest risks for ENS stock?
The biggest risks are execution delays in the new lithium and TPPL opportunities, continued weakness in forklifts and transportation, and valuation compression if earnings recovery stalls. The report also notes a 15.0% year-over-year decline in earnings in the core growth data, which shows the recovery is not yet fully established.
+Which business segments are driving EnerSys growth?
Energy Systems and Specialty are the main growth engines, with Energy Systems revenue up 6.7% in Q4 and Specialty revenue up 8.1% in Q4. Motive Power is still the weak spot, with Q4 revenue down 5.7% and adjusted operating earnings down 20.9%.
