▌Investment Summary
Kinder Morgan (KMI) looks like a solid Buy right now, earning an overall grade of B+ on the strength of its natural gas infrastructure franchise and improving operating momentum. Our fair value is $35.50, and the stock still offers attractive upside as LNG-linked demand, power generation needs and a $9.6B backlog support continued growth.

Thesis

Kinder Morgan Inc (KMI) offers a moderate-risk income and infrastructure growth profile. The thesis rests on three facts: natural gas pipelines produced 64.9% of 2025 segment revenue, Q2 2026 adjusted EBITDA rose 12% year over year, and management raised its confidence in 2026 results while keeping net debt to adjusted EBITDA at 3.6x.

The growth engine is increasingly tied to natural gas demand from LNG exports, electric power generation and industrial expansion. KMI's Q2 backlog stood at $9.6B, with natural gas projects representing about 92% of the backlog. More than 60% was tied to power generation and local distribution company demand. Management also cited more than $10B of additional opportunities beyond the sanctioned backlog.

The counterweight is valuation and leverage. KMI trades near $30.94, at 21.5x trailing earnings and 20.0x forward earnings, while the PEG ratio is 3.2. Debt remains substantial at about $32.1B against $109M of year-end cash, and the annual current ratio is 0.64. The result is a Buy for investors seeking an income-oriented midstream holding with visible gas infrastructure growth, but not a balance-sheet-light bargain.

Company Overview

Kinder Morgan is a North American energy infrastructure company headquartered in Houston, Texas. Founded in 1997 and listed on the NYSE since February 2011, it employs 11,028 people and operates through Natural Gas Pipelines, Products Pipelines, Terminals and CO2.

The company owns or operates about 78,000 miles of pipelines and 136 terminals. Its assets transport and store natural gas, gasoline, crude oil, carbon dioxide, renewable fuels, chemicals and other commodities. KMI describes its model as primarily fee-based and supported by long-term take-or-pay arrangements, which gives the business a more defensive cash-flow profile than an upstream producer.

Natural Gas Pipelines is the center of gravity. Its 2025 revenue was $11.0B, or 64.9% of company segment revenue, compared with $8.9B in 2024. Products Pipelines generated $2.7B, Terminals produced $2.1B and CO2 generated $1.2B in 2025.

The company is led by CEO Kimberly Dang, President Dax Sanders and CFO David Michels. Executive Chairman Richard Kinder remains a significant shareholder. His purchase of 1.0 million shares at $25.96 on October 27, 2025 provides a concrete insider ownership signal, while the broader ownership base includes 70.6% institutional ownership.

Business Segment Deep Dive

Natural Gas Pipelines is the strongest operating segment. Q2 2026 transport volumes increased 7% year over year, while gathering volumes rose 26%. KinderHawk gathering volumes in the Haynesville increased 54%. Segment EBDA reached $1.52B, up from $1.44B in Q2 2025.

Products Pipelines remains a large logistics network, but its recent volume trend is softer. Refined product volumes declined 5% year over year, while crude and condensate volumes fell 16% on a reported comparison affected by the Double H conversion to NGL service. Excluding Double H from both periods, crude and condensate volumes declined about 5%. Higher commodity prices and butane blending volumes supported earnings.

Terminals generated Q2 2026 segment EBDA of $310M, compared with $300M a year earlier. Liquids lease capacity was 93%, and tank utilization at the Houston Ship Channel and Carteret hubs was approximately 99%. The tanker fleet was contracted at 100% through 2026, 97% through 2027 and 80% through 2028, assuming expected options are exercised.

CO2 adds commodity exposure and a smaller operating growth lever. Q2 net oil production volumes rose 10%, SACROC production increased 15%, NGL volumes grew 9% and CO2 volumes rose 5%. RNG volumes increased 8% as facility uptime and hydrocarbon recovery improved.

Flagship Product Analysis

KMI's flagship offering is its integrated natural gas transportation and storage network. The platform combines interstate and intrastate pipelines, gathering systems, processing and treating facilities, storage and LNG-related infrastructure. That combination lets KMI serve producers, utilities, power generators, LNG facilities and industrial customers across multiple points in the gas chain.

Q2 operating data shows the network gaining traction. Natural gas transport volumes reached 47,886 BBtu per day, compared with 44,818 BBtu per day a year earlier. Gathering volumes reached 4,637 BBtu per day, up from 3,692 BBtu per day. NGL transport volumes increased to 52 MBbl per day from 39 MBbl per day.

The product is valuable because pipeline capacity is difficult to duplicate. KMI's network serves established corridors, storage sites and demand centers, while long-term contracts reduce reliance on daily commodity prices. The current growth cycle adds a second layer: existing routes can be expanded through brownfield projects, often with lower construction complexity than an entirely new corridor.

That statement from Kimberly Dang is supported by the 7% increase in transport volumes, the 26% increase in gathering volumes and the $9.6B backlog. It is not a claim about a single asset. It describes a network benefiting from several demand sources at once.

Innovation & Competitive Advantage

KMI's innovation is infrastructure-based rather than software-based. The company expands existing systems, links storage to new power corridors and converts assets to serve higher-value products. The Double H conversion into NGL service and the Gulf Coast Express expansion illustrate how KMI redeploys established infrastructure rather than relying only on greenfield construction.

The Gulf Coast Express expansion entered service in June 2026 and added about 570 MMcf per day of capacity, bringing total system capacity to approximately 2.59 Bcf per day. The TGP Cumberland project added about 245,000 Dth per day through a 32-mile lateral serving a new Tennessee gas-fired power plant.

KMI also has route density. Management cited four existing pipes in the corridor tied to Project 219 South, access to multiple supply points and the ability to connect volumes to Mississippi Crossing and the Southeast. For Permian Link, management highlighted the connection between pipeline infrastructure and storage near a growing power corridor.

That operating rule is strategically important. KMI's growth plan depends on contracted projects, not on building capacity first and hoping demand follows. The largest natural gas projects were described in company materials as more than 90% contracted, with average tenor above 20 years and average customer credit quality of A-.

Operations & Supply Chain

KMI's project execution was productive in Q2 2026. More than $650M of projects entered service, including TGP Cumberland, the Hiland Express conversion and the Gulf Coast Express expansion. The backlog declined from $10.1B to $9.6B because completed projects exceeded approximately $200M of additions during the quarter.

The company also approved almost $400M of projects in advanced contract negotiations. Management identified an opportunity set exceeding $10B beyond the sanctioned backlog and expects additional project decisions during the second half of 2026. Mississippi Crossing and South System Expansion 4 were progressing on schedule and on budget, while Trident was approximately 60% complete.

Supply chain execution remains a practical risk. Management cited pressure on compressor procurement timelines and said the company is incorporating those conditions into project economics. The experience gained on Mississippi Crossing and South System 4 gives KMI an operating process for managing equipment lead times, but it does not remove construction or permitting risk.

Capital deployment is substantial. KMI spent $1.92B in total capital year to date in 2026, including growth capital, sustaining capital and joint venture contributions. Management expects more than $3B of annual expansion capital based on the current backlog and described sufficient balance-sheet capacity to fund additional projects within its leverage framework.

Market Analysis

The market backdrop favors gas transportation and storage. Wood Mackenzie's outlook cited by KMI puts U.S. natural gas demand above 160 Bcf per day by 2035, approximately 46 Bcf per day above 2025 levels. LNG exports and power generation are the primary drivers in that forecast.

The broader storage and transportation market is also expanding. Mordor Intelligence estimates the oil storage market at $24.5B in 2026, rising to $31.8B by 2031, while its natural gas storage estimate rises from $12.0B to $17.0B over the same period. These figures cover market categories broader than KMI, but they show the demand for physical energy logistics remains investable.

KMI's opportunity is concentrated in the most attractive demand corridors. Its backlog is about 92% natural gas, and more than 60% is tied to power generation and local distribution company demand. The company also has projects tied to LNG, including transport growth on the Tennessee Gas Pipeline.

Market growth will not translate into automatic returns. Midstream customers compare tariffs, route access, reliability, construction timing and contract terms. KMI's 2026 transcript repeatedly described the Southeast and Northeast corridors as highly competitive, which limits the pricing power of any individual project.

Customer Profile

KMI serves producers, utilities, LNG exporters, power generators, refiners, fuel marketers, chemical companies, industrial users and commodity traders. Its natural gas systems connect supply basins with utilities and power markets, while its terminals support refined products, renewable fuels, chemicals, ethanol, metals and petroleum coke.

The customer relationship is built around reliability and capacity. KMI has reported more than 500 firm transportation customers on a major gas system, along with 140 Bcf of storage and 27,961 MW of directly connected power. Those connections create switching costs because customers value a route that is already permitted, integrated and operational.

Contract duration strengthens visibility. Company materials cite a remaining weighted average life of about seven years for natural gas transportation contracts and about 12 years for LNG regasification, liquefaction and associated storage contracts. The long duration supports cash-flow planning and helps justify the capital required for expansion.

The customer mix also introduces credit and volume risk. KMI depends on producers, refiners, utilities and LNG developers, so a customer project delay can shift the timing of a pipeline investment. Management's emphasis on contracts with creditworthy customers is therefore central to the investment case.

Competitive Landscape

KMI competes with Williams Companies (WMB), Enterprise Products Partners (EPD), Energy Transfer (ET), Enbridge (ENB), ONEOK (OKE), TC Energy (TRP), MPLX (MPLX) and DT Midstream (DTM). WMB and DTM are particularly relevant in natural gas transmission, while EPD, ET, OKE and MPLX have broader exposure to NGLs, crude, fractionation and export infrastructure.

KMI's advantage is scale in gas transportation. The company has reported about 42,000 miles of wholly owned natural gas pipelines and interests in another approximately 25,000 miles. Its network density, storage links and established rights of way create a barrier that smaller competitors cannot easily reproduce.

The tradeoff is a more concentrated business mix. EPD and ET have broader liquids and export exposure, while KMI is more heavily weighted toward natural gas transmission and terminals. That positioning is favorable when gas demand grows, but it limits diversification when gas pipeline competition intensifies.

A 2025 Morningstar midstream snapshot placed KMI at about 12.1x EV to EBITDA, compared with 11.0x for EPD, 8.8x for ET, 10.2x for OKE, 11.4x for MPLX, 15.3x for WMB and 13.9x for ENB. KMI therefore sits above several diversified peers but below premium-valued gas and utility-style infrastructure names.

Macro & Geopolitical Landscape

LNG trade is a major macro support. The Energy Information Administration reported record global LNG trade volumes in 2025, with Asian and European buyers competing for cargoes during supply disruptions. That environment supports U.S. gas production, export feed gas and the pipelines connecting supply regions to liquefaction facilities.

Electricity demand adds a second structural driver. KMI management cited a Georgia Power report showing more than 75 GW of potential power demand between the early 2020s and the mid-2030s. Gas-fired generation requires dependable pipeline capacity, particularly where data centers and industrial loads are growing faster than local infrastructure.

The policy landscape is mixed. Interstate pipeline construction requires federal environmental review and FERC certification, while local opposition and environmental rules can extend project timelines. KMI received final FERC environmental impact statements for Mississippi Crossing and South System Expansion 4 in June 2026 and expected certificates by the end of July, illustrating the importance of regulatory milestones.

Geopolitical developments support energy security spending but can also increase volatility. The EIA's record LNG data and reported competition between Asian and European buyers strengthen the case for export infrastructure. At the same time, commodity price swings and changes in shipping rules, including a temporary Jones Act waiver cited by KMI, affect terminals and tanker economics.

Closing

Kinder Morgan is a mature infrastructure company entering a favorable gas-demand cycle. Its 2025 revenue reached $16.95B, Q2 2026 adjusted EBITDA rose 12%, natural gas transport volumes increased 7% and the backlog remained $9.6B after more than $650M of projects entered service.

The investment case is strongest when viewed as a combination of income and incremental growth. KMI declared a $0.2975 quarterly dividend, or $1.19 annualized, while management expects adjusted EPS of $1.36 and adjusted EBITDA of $8.6B for 2026. The company's network, contracts and project pipeline provide a credible path to durable cash generation.

The main discipline point is valuation. KMI is not priced like a distressed pipeline operator, and its 3.2 PEG ratio and 1.03 debt-to-equity ratio matter. At prices near $31.50, the risk-reward is favorable for a moderate-risk investor. At $35.50, the market reaches our fair value estimate. Above $40.00, the stock would require stronger execution and faster growth to preserve an attractive return profile.

Growth is being driven by natural gas demand from LNG exports, electric power generation and industrial expansion. Q2 transport volumes rose 7% year over year, gathering volumes increased 26%, and KinderHawk gathering volumes in the Haynesville jumped 54%.
+How risky is KMI's balance sheet?
KMI carries meaningful leverage, with net debt to adjusted EBITDA at 3.6x, about $32.1B of debt and only $109M of year-end cash. That is manageable for a fee-based midstream business, but it is not a balance-sheet-light story.
+What are the biggest things to watch in KMI's business?
The key watch items are Natural Gas Pipelines, which produced 64.9% of 2025 segment revenue, and the $9.6B backlog that is about 92% natural gas-related. Investors should also watch whether Products Pipelines volume softness offsets continued strength in gas and terminals.
